⏵ character information
name: Chuck Taine/Bouncing Boy
canon: Legion of Superheroes
age: 20
canon point: End of series
history: https://losh.fandom.com/wiki/Bouncing_Boy
abilities: Chuck has the ability to inflate himself into a giant, moderate invulnerable bouncing ball. His invulnerablity isn't anywhere near Kryptonian levels, but he is durable enough that most conventional weaponry doesn't hurt him.

He's also an ace pilot and is skilled at starship engineering.
personality:

Chuck's personality can be boiled down to the idea that he loves helping people. He got powers and despite their silliness immediately turned to trying to join the Legion because he wanted to use his abilities to help others. Even being rejected multiple times didn't push him away from that desire. Once he joined he even turned those rejections into an opportunity to help others by running seminars for Legion hopefuls.

He's very empathetic. He goes out of his way to try and boost the moods of those who failed their tryouts and is the first to try and help Triplicate Girl/Duo Damsel work through the loss of one of her selves.

He's also very clever. He turned turning into a giant ball into a battle-effective powerset, and was the primary strategist behind the rescue of Winath and the destruction of the Sun-Eater; the former of which earned him the position of Legion Leader.

Despite all this he's still modest. His election as team leader came entirely out of left field as it was something he hadn't even been angling for. About the only thing he does really have an ego about is his skills as a pilot, and even then he'd be willing to admit someone is better if he runs into someone that is. That, and starship engineering. As one of the two more technologically capable members of the team he and Brainiac 5 have occasionally butted heads over ship maintenance. Especially when it's done without his input.

He's a big fan of cheesy horror movies. Any suitable spooky situation is going to get commentary about horror movie tropes.

Inventory: Legion Flight Ring - grants the wearer the ability to fly and survive in a vacuum.
Powers —

Skills: Piloting, Leadership skills, Starship repair, trajectory calculation on the fly.
Superpowers: Chuck can inflate himself into a giant, bouncing, rubber ball. In ball form he's moderately invulnerable.
Limitations: His invulnerability isn't perfect. Sufficient force like would seriously hurt or kill anyone without his powers will still hurt him and potentially knock him out. His invulnerability just minimizes the chance of any lasting injury.
Personality —
Please EITHER (1) Summarize your character's personality — including motivations, behaviors, and psychology — in 300-600 words OR (2) Respond to the questions below.

  • What were your character's most formative experiences?:
  • Gaining his powers. Despite the apparent silliness, it gave him the ability to help people. Something Chuck loves to do.
  • The four times he tried out for the Legion. He never gave up despite each rejection, and it instilled in him a desire to help other people improve their skills up to Legion Standards by running seminars during the lead-up to tryouts.
  • During the cosmic storm that struck Winath, he was the person with the best picture of how to prevent the disaster from getting worse. That, plus a little encouragement from Triplicate Girl, led to him becoming leader of the Legion. Knowing that other people trusted his ability to get things done was a confidence boost for him.
  • His first mission as leader, however, was marred by tragedy. Though the Legion was successful in defeating the Sun-Eater, it was due ti the sacrifice of Ferro Lad. Though it's very unlikely anyone blamed him for it, thye death of someone under his command was still a traumatic incident for Chuck, and is very likely a contributing factor in him stepping down as leader before the second season.
  • What values, morals, and/or philosophies does your character live by, and how are those beliefs demonstrated? What happens when they have to compromise what they believe in?
  • Chuck's moral core can largely be summed up by the Legion oath: "To the Legion of Super-Heroes, I make this solemn pledge: to use my powers for good. To fight for justice and protect the innocent. To aid my fellow Legionnaires in times of peril and to keep their secrets safe."  To Chuck, this isn't merely just words, it's a calling. It's also not something Chuck is willing to compromise on, ever.
  • What is your character afraid of? How does avoiding or preventing these fears influence their actions and decisions?
  • Getting stuck inside a recreation of a horror movie. It's happened before, and it was enough to know he never wants it to happen again.
  • More seriously, though, failure. He's got  a very high-stakes job, and people could die if he messes it up.
  • What goals does your character have right now? What do they want, and how do they go about getting it?
  • Be the best hero he can be and help people who need helping.  Help prepare any Legion hopefuls for their tryouts and the hard work that comes after. They're simple goals, but they're things he enjoys doing.
Gameplay —
Areas of Interest / Brainstorming:

Chucks' actually going to be outright offended by how the Guilds recruit people. Being a hero is something that should be entirely voluntary. Not only that, but they're effectively drafting people who could be considered either refugees or victims of a natural disaster with the threat of leaving them on street with no resources if they decide to refuse.

He's going to hide his identity to a degree, most notably by swapping out his suit's goggles with something reflective early on and avoiding revealing Bouncing Boy and Chuck Taine are one and the same.

He's also going to earn some money by hustling people at pool.
